History is a compilation of countless personal and often heroic stories. We worship our heroes and take their way of living as inspiration for our own lives. But next to the heroes are the people who supported them, who picked up the pieces they left behind.
She never rode that trishaw again is the story of Ah Ma, Chi Yin’s paternal grandmother. Chi Yin’s main story is about the life of her paternal grandfather Ye Ye who was murdered by the followers of Chiang Kai-shek and in a larger sense the history of post-colonial Malaya. The book of Ah Ma functions as a prologue to that larger story. A post humous road movie showing archival photographs from Ah Ma who travelled the world after raising a family as a single mother. A textual monologue by Chi Yin’s oldest uncle Bo Bo (Chun Xing) interacts with the photographs.
